Money For Black-Owned Businesses? Is There Any?
I design all-natural cosmetics for all women and launched my company in late '06. Within 2 weeks of launching, Jane Magazine expressed interest & contacted us, and an online men's magazine did a write-up about our men's products.

Well, Jane went under before featuring our prods & we can't afford to pay anybody to use our cosmetics in fashion editorials, which would give us maximum exposure & cost 70% less than outright advertising. The Co. also needs to hire a professional manager w/ industry experience to manage the Co.

I'm a black woman with $3,000 worth of debt over her head. The 3 grand comes from delinquent college loans in collections. What are my chances of getting any capital for my business at this point?

I am not only a woman but a black woman & the company sells from it's online site for the moment.
My credit isn't very good because 2 college loans have gone to collects. I owe a little over $3,000. Do I have a chance?

THANK YOU!
Yes, there are. There is capital for female-owned startups as well as minority. Since this money will ofcourse be a business loan or from an investor, it will have to be paid back. Just keep trying and you'll find something! Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance. But being white and a man, I really don't know much about female or minority business resources. Good luck!
Are there any books based on African-American/Black stereotypes with the media?
Or any books, magazine articles, journals ONLINE talking about how black people are portrayed by the media.

For example, In television/film.. black people are portrayed as being poor, gangster, into rap music, living in the hood. In many crappy college commercials, they show black people (and sometimes latinos too) to represent crappy colleges, and also in commercials like KFC, Popeyes, etc they usually always show black people. For example, in a Church's chicken photo ad they had a black man saying "I know what good is"

I've tried researching, but I haven't found what I needed. Please Help!!

Is Essence Magazine out there to sell products to insecure black women?
Essence magazine is the most disgusting sexist stupid magazine ever. They promote self hate with stupid dump articles about how to make your man stay dress to impress him and how to be a good lover. Its like they came out of the 1950's. They have a business arrangement with Beyonce featuring her everyday on their online site promoting her smelly perfume annoying music. They do not show anything educational or worldly on purpose to make the masses stupid and de-pendant on their stupid advises and hair product advice. As a black woman do you not feel your intelligence insulted by the crap they publish and promote
As a white man Im insulted with their blatant attempt at dumbing down people. You are one of the few who look at the world this way. There are more like us and we are growing in awareness at the manipulation used to all groups of people. Spread the word sistaa!
Greys Anatomy fired....blames it on being black. Typical?
( "Grey's Anatomy" star Isaiah Washington said racism was a factor in his firing from the hit ABC series after he twice used an anti-gay slur.
Washington, who initially used the epithet during an onset clash with a co-star, told Newsweek magazine that "someone heard the booming voice of a black man and got really scared and that was the beginning of the end for me."
in the interview posted online Thursday.
"My mistake was thinking black people get second chances. I was wrong on all fronts," he said. )
Why is it everyone blames racism for everything? I am so sick of this bull. Don Imus was fired for saying what he did, so this guy should be fired for saying what he did. You didnt hear don imus say "oh my i was fired because i am white".
I am so sick of this double standard crap.
Just wanna know what you guys think of this.
personally I didn't even think of him being black until he made this statement, I just thought of him as an idiot, pure and simple. So did the people who fired him I'm sure. He's annoying, and we're over it so he should move on
Why is the Black community so scared of showing Black women as sexy?
This is a more serious Q because most people don't pay attention to this.. but do you ever notice how upset people get when they feel Black women are showed as too sexy in the media? Years ago when rap videos really showed BLACK women some people were p*ssed. There were people talking about how incredibly terrible it was and all of that stuff, but when they switch it and show lighter girls then it seems like people don't care as much. I was reading an article online that was opposing Black female being shown in "White men's magazines" like Playboy (Naomi Campbell had done a Playboy shoot att) because they said it was showing White American males that they still can "own" a Black female! huh?... o.0. Another "review" of a book called "Black Ladies" which showed nude African women said it created a fantasy of a man exploring this "dark continent" and coming across the nude women who would be fulfill his "ultimate slave girl fantasy". I've noticed this before where a Black female in the mainstream can't just be "normal" & sexy, it has to have a racial tie to it somehow...

Also I read a ton of articles about people saying BW in interracial porn is degrading and racist back when I was in a critical thinking class discussing race, but aren't ALL women degraded in porn? Its like some people in society are uncomfortable with Black female sexuality, but see White female sexuality as "normal"...
I disagree wholeheartedly. Speaking as an outsider - the whole lightskinned / darkskinned argument is something only Black people debate about. The rest of us don't really notice, to be honest.

But I was JUST talking with my boyfriend like 10 minutes ago (who is Black) about his little sister and the type of images being pushed on her in the media. He was saying that the image of Black women is being torn down by the media by implanting the biggest whores they can to be representatives of Black women (when of course in reality, the vast majority of Black men are NOTHING like what they are shown as on TV).

They put people in place who send mixed messages - like Keri Hilson, who on one turn says things like, "Black girls are beautiful" (positivity) and then in the next breath, strips down to strings, and sings, "I got the kind of pu$$y that can keep you out the streets." We were JUST talking about this. Like for example, one day I was playing Wii with my boyfriend's little sister and she had her Wii Mi (the character you make for yourself) as a White girl. And I was like, "Why are all your characters White?" And you know what she told me? She said, "White girls are prettier than Black girls." Of course I told her that's not true and I told her mom about it and they corrected her. But why did she think that? Because of Disney, Miley Cyrus, etc being shoved down her throat. And she isn't allowed to watch things like 106 and Park or BET because of all the nasty representations of Black women they use. They are portrayed as hugely oversexed women on TV. Imagine a young impressionable girl like my boyfriend's sister listening to Nicki Minaj going on and on about her own vagina and BARBIE in the same sentence. The image of Black women has been thoroughly trashed by the media, and not because the media is afraid of showing them as sexy. Quite the opposite. They want to oversex them to make them look like they are all smuts.

Interracial porn is porn, by the way. It's utterly nonsensical to relate porn to what the media does. The porn industry is worlds away from mainstream media, and it degrades everyone and is full of fetishes. It should be taken lightly - it's just porn.

Hi Lana,

The SBA will take forever and they will not loan money to businesses in debt but you can check with your bank to check the qualifications.

My other advice would be to contact several of the black magazines such as Ebony and Essence. Try and get to the editors office and explain your situation. One other way but you would really have to use the old nogin is try to get through to Oprah's people somehow she is known for supporting all types of black enterprise. I would start with her magazine and in the front there will be a list of the staff, start at the top and keep calling down the list until you get a sympathetic ear to listen to what you are looking for. With some determination it can be done.

When my ex left me I was devastated, he was truly my first love despite I had a previous boyfriend before him. It's a long story how I met this female but she was my exes friend, she act like she cared that I was going through the heartbreak of losing my man of 3yrs. She said to the bitter end how she is not into black men (she is Columbian but looks black) and said "eeww" when referring to my ex..well something in my spirit told me to stay away from her so I did! Months later a picture of her was online in her underwear topless in his apt I was so heart broken then down the line I found out they were a couple I can't believe she did this to me..and especially him for doing me so dirty knowing I had befriend her! Wow, whoever photo-shopped her picture is awful at it.
You are beautiful.
And I think it's best you try and forget about both of them.
She is a two-faced b-tch, and you will meet a new boy.
This is just one small chapter in your book of life.
Keep your chin up gorgeous! :)
